I would say overall it's an ambitious choice and could be very rewarding if you find yourself in a company that succeeds, but nobody really knows where crypto will go and most startups unfortunately fail.

A developer career is currently very rewarding in this space indeed: high demand and not enough skilled professionals, so compensations can be high and choice of careers abundant! Indeed as mentioned, the space consists of mainly startups that have a high risk of failure and the space itself is very much developing and constantly changing, but still largely unproven, so there is always the risk that the whole industry gets wiped out. Don't let that discourage anyone, because there is so much opportunity and where there is no risk there is nothing to gain. Another very promising career choice is for legal expertise on blockchain and cryptocurrency and/or (impo) legal experts that learn smart contract coding.
